kids these days...

Currently Reading
The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical
By Shane Claiborne
see related

oh man do i have some stuff to share...

i know it has been awhile since i've blogged, so here goes nothing...

reading a book by Shane Claiborne, founder of the Simple Way...
Irresistible Revolution
you need to read this book...

i've been coaching high school football this year.
it's a blast to be at the high school; a privilege to be involved
however, i'm a little frustrated with the players...

we have some straight up PUNKS on the team...
kids that act as though the world owes them something; that i owe them something...
this is nothing new for most, but it's new to me...

at the same time some of my youth group kids are driving me insane...
so
i'm reading this book and come across this quote:

“God forgive us for all those we have lost because we made the gospel boring.  I am convinced that if we lose kids to the culture of drugs and materialism, of violence and war, it’s because we don’t dare them, not because we don’t entertain them.  It’s because we make the gospel too easy, not because we make it too difficult.  Kids want to do something heroic with their lives, which is why they play video games and join the army.  But what are they to do with a church that teaches them to tiptoe through life so they can arrive safely at death?”  (226)

the organization Young Life was founded on the principle that "it is a sin to bore a kid with the Gospel."  however, Young Life went the way of entertainment and dumbing down to make the Gospel more interesting...
Claiborne is talking about something very different...
he's talking about making the Gospel about sacrifice; about Jesus

what a concept!

dwell on that quote...
i'll have more on the video game and fantasy thing in the future...

i am FIRED UP

I see a nutritionist and we came up with a diet that was simple to follow (though not necessarily _easy_ to follow, to give up junk food). There's a list of food to eat from and one not to eat from, with no serving size limits on the allowed list. On the disallowed side, no sugar, wheat, dairy, eggs, anything with preservatives, alcohol, coffee, red meats, fried foods; on the allowed side, all vegetables, most fruit, fish, turkey, chicken, different kinds of rice, buckwheat, quinoa, most nuts, lots of water. After about a week I settled in to the regime, though I still long for a cheeseburger, or good pale ale or strong coffee. (Eventually I will work moderate amounts of all the things that are disallowed, just not now.)

Also, moderate exercise (but seriously I've been pretty tame).

The proof will be this week when I have my fat, muscle, water percentages checked; I really don't want to have lost muscle, that will piss me off. Also, in about a month when I'll have my blood lips checked; if these have improved that will be rewarding.

That was a ramble! Have a good one.

I ran into the same things when I was serving at the little SBC church in Southern Indiana. When I dropped the whole "let's play games and make this fun" mentality and started going verse by verse through the Bible teaching them hard stuff, they got fired up like mad. Makes ya wonder if Jesus wasn't right after all...

Hey! Haven't seen a post from you in a while! I was wondering if you had a list of really good starter books for me to read - I've become a lay advisor to our Children and Youth Ministry committee and you always seem to be reading the greatest resources! Just one or two suggestions would be great... I'm definitely going to track down Shane Clairborne's book.  Thanks and have a great day!

There's something to be said of inspirational movies that deal with sports.

Concepts that are derived there (some based on real life stories)...can still be usefull today.

- Coach Carter

- Remember the Titans

Holding the PUNK kids accountable, with the parental and school backing, can create wonders both on...and especially...off the field.

Coach Walsh said it best when discussing why he did things with the 49ers the way he did.  He believed that if an athelete's life is well rounded and good quality off of the field...the by product would be excellence on the field.

After 3 super bowl wins in the 80's under his belt...along with countless other contributions to the NFL...I think he had something proven.

If you'd like to touch base on his further...I'm able to assist.

Blessing.

Just had to chime in - this is a truly wonderful book!  Very eye-opening, and literally life-changing for this 40-something. :)

Nice to see you back.
I've heard a lot about this book. Seems that it's shaking people up and I can't wait to get a copy myself.

i started to think you...um...passed on or something. seriously, how would one know or not if you're just xanga aquaintances?  anyway, i'm glad you didn't and i will look forward to more posts!

kids these days DO expect something because they HAVE been "entertained" all their lives and not challenged/dared.  so true....not across the board, but in general.

Amen!  Langer made a comment in Foundations of Worship class about "Billy Joel theology" (being facetious, of course) but I think there's really something to it . . . Billy Joel takes a straight look at some things about the human condition and society that church so often refuses to acknowledge.  In his song "No Man's Land" from ca. 1990 there's a line:

"We see these children
with their boredom and their vacant stares
God help us all if we're to blame
for their unanswered prayers."

Tragic, and so true.  If you e-mail me at my school address with your new contact info I can send you a few things that might help direct the fired-upness in constructive directions and help kids start thinking about how to "do something!" that matters, esp.  concerning environmental and consumer ethics.

P.S.  I envy you your time for elective reading.  Less than 8 months and I'm out!  : )

Got an idea for you . . .

Check out Tolkien's Ordinary Virtues by Mark Eddy Smith.  It's a fabulous little book divided into 30 bite-sized chapters (perfect for devotions or small group conversation-starters--accessible to teenagers but entirely relevant to adults) each of which highlights a theological topic or friuit of the spirit, with solid Biblical basis but taking all of the illustrations from the Lord of the Rings.  Smith does a beautiful job of drawing out the 'moral of the story' and helping the reader apply it, inspiring one to live well and imaginatively, engaging everyday life as an adventure.
