conservative theology, video games, etc...

why do so-called "conservative Christians" (those that are pro-Focus on the Family, anti-gay rights, anti-abortion) ok with violent video games and supportive of war?

i recently had an epiphany concerning a video game i really enjoy...
Counter-Strike...
don't know if you've played it, but it's great; at least i thought it was...
in this "first person shooter" you are a counter-terrorist or terrorist and try and kill the opposition...

the setting:
i'm watching Black Hawk Down
i'm sitting next to a high school student playing a similar game where Iragi Insurgents fight US Soldiers
i'm at this house because the oldest brother is graduating from boot camp...

my epiphany:
i don't want anyone i know being in the situation depicted in this movie
people, real life flesh and blood people, die in war
the young man graduating from boot camp could be the one in the movie
the young man could be the one in the video game

does this seem like a problem to anyone else?
how do we address these issues in the church?

If you're in leadership at my church, you don't address them at all - and if you do, you're careful to not reveal where you stand on any of the issues.  For some reason, this really bothers me.

Of course, I just finished watching all of Ken Burns' "The War" - so this topic is pretty actively percolating in my brain at the moment.

What part bothers you, the video game, the movie, or the boot camp? Just so I'm clear.

i think some support war more to support bush period.

I support because i think pulling out would cause more blood than it would save.

violence is fun for some reason.... sin nature? I don't know.

But thats been a question on my mind too.... why is the church a war monger?

It's all Constantine's fault. :(

It really is my favorite thing that American churchgoers excel at being among the least genuinely hospitable and authentic people I've ever encountered. This is why I'm going to be the Covenant Lorax when I grow up and not a pastor. I would get myself fired or shot in 30 seconds or less. Although being the Lorax (Dr. Seuss character; if you haven't read the book, do!) is more or less a guarantee of perpetual exasperation and the joy of telling people things they don't want to hear and usually won't take seriously. Sigh.

This is the greatest commandment: Follow orders and believe everything you hear, unless a liberal or socialist is speaking (in which case Romans 13:1-7 is no longer the greatest commandment and it is your solemn moral duty to do everything possible to malign this person and undermine his or her authority, especially if it's a her). The second is like it: Be "nice" and for goodness sakes don't talk about anything difficult, unpleasant, or challenging (especially not at Bible study!) unless it is how to help Jesus in his explicitly stated mission of protecting the chosen people (middle-class white U.S. citizens) from homosexuals, abortionists, immigrants, and liberals.
